How Many LDP Members Have Unification Church Connections?

That’s a very good question, and one that Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party has attempted to answer. In its survey of members, it turns out about half the members have ties to the controversial South Korean cult.

Following the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, scrutiny of the group’s political connections in Japan is at an all-time high. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has declared that he is taking this issue seriously, but it remains to be seen what he intends to do about the influence this so-called church has over his political party.

It is surprising to see that the Unification Church has become such a hot topic in Japan. Usually, an assassin who tries to bring attention to a certain topic by killing a world leader has the opposite effect. However, there simply is no sympathy for the Unification Church, nor should there be.

The LDP’s ties to the group seem to be extensive, and the public deserves to know the truth. Hopefully, a full report will be made, and the voters can choose whether to keep sending the LDP to the Diet. However, it’s already long past time for a change.
